LMHRA, NPHIL Participate in Global Fund Healthcare Waste Management Workshop

(Monrovia, December 2, 2024) – A crucial workshop focusing on Healthcare Waste Management (HCWM) Planning and Roadmap Development will take place from December 3 to 5, 2024, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Organized by The Global Fund in partnership with Mott MacDonald, Gavi, and UNICEF, this event aims to improve healthcare waste management practices in participating countries and promote sustainable waste disposal methods in healthcare settings.

Representing Liberia at the workshop are Del Nagbe, Deputy Program Coordinator of the Liberia Medicines & Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA), and Amos Gborie from the National Public Health Institute (NPHIL).

The workshop will gather key stakeholders, including government officials involved in immunization programs, UNICEF representatives focused on immunization, and primary recipients of Global Fund projects related to HCWM. Participants will engage in informative sessions addressing topics such as HCWM introductions by The Global Fund and Gavi, UNICEF's support role in HCWM, and the presentation of innovative green technologies for waste management.

Key objectives of the workshop include: Facilitating knowledge-sharing among countries regarding HCWM actions and budgeting needs; Developing country-specific work plans alongside a budgeted two-year roadmap for HCWM; Connecting Gavi and The Global Fund with participating countries to explore funding opportunities, and Promoting the adoption of greener HCWM technologies and sustainability measures.

Workshop activities will include discussions on assessment tools, presentations of previous HCWM roadmaps, and shared experiences from participant countries. The expected outcomes include the creation of budgeted two-year roadmaps and actionable plans based on prior HCWM assessments, capacity building on HCWM assessments and budgeting, and strengthening connections between HCWM plans and potential funding sources.

According to Michelle Seidel, Senior Adviser: Immunization and Global Lead on Immunization Supply Chain at UNICEF, this workshop marks a significant advancement in enhancing global healthcare waste management practices, contributing to safer and more sustainable health environments.
